A prompting is that inner voice that tells you to do something. For example ” don’t just stand there, go help that old lady with her bags”. Most often we ignore it. Cody Bateman did this once and it changed his life forever. He shares it in a masterpiece book called Promptings, which is sure to transform your life as it did mine. I was so moved by it I have decided to dedicate a blog to people listening to their promptings and sharing it with the world. May we all be inspired to listen to our sweet inner voice.

Prompting 1

Today I was very tired. I had worked my non-profit after school program and then raced to manage a restaurant I work at in the west village 2 days in a row. I just woke up exhausted. Now headed to the bus stop to take it to the train for an hour commute back to my after school program. Don’t get me wrong I love it! The kids are amazing, my partner in the program Johwell is a dream co-worker so there is never any headed to work blues. I was just good old fashion tired. As soon as I got to the bus stop a guy who seemed had been waiting for me even though we have never met instantly began talking my ear off. I had already decided I needed to send a few business emails. He didn’t care! As I was writing my first email he talked as if I was looking him straight in the eye. Due to my fatigue his talking really broke my focus. As I tried to just hurry up and finish while saying “wow, oh really and hmmm” to not be rude to my new best friend I heard a little voice say “stop writing, put your phone away and give this guy the attention he obviously needs”. I said back to the voice “ok Mr. Cody”. So I did. We went in and rambled about any and everything for 10 mins straight. I hardly said a word, I realized all he wanted was a “wow, oh really and hmmm” but this time I was actually listening. He said a few funny things that made me laugh. As we got on the bus I actually was in better spirits. I sat down to finish my first email. I looked it over and realized this is a horribly written email! I was tired and grumpy when I was writing this and thought to myself “thank God I stopped before I was ready to send because it was a very important email and I wasn’t in the write mind frame to be writing this. Now that my new best friend had talked my ear off and made laugh a few times I was in better spirits to see how bad it was. I quickly realized the Universe has used him to give me a few smiles so I could properly send this opening email to a hopeful new business partner. Once again I thought “Thanks Mr. Cody”. I’m sure you have picked up on Mr. Cody is the name I have given my inner voice since he wrote his fantastic book. I re-wrote the email in my normal fashion and after hitting send, instead of starting the next one I realized I don’t want to write emails now. I’d rather just sit and enjoy the moment.

SoCo

All it took was three friends, some Southern comfort food, a hint of Caribbean fusion, a dash of Creole and Cajun spices, and, oh yeah, a vacant space on Myrtle Ave. On July 18, after years of dreaming and months of planning, Peter Best, Malissa Browne and Sim Walker opened the doors of SoCo, a Southern style eatery with Carribean influences in Clinton Hill. The three owners met at Negril Village, a traditional Caribbean restaurant owned by Walker’s mother in the West Village. Best began working as a busser there 10 years ago, and eventually climbed the ranks to become a partner. His stepsister Malissa was the restaurant’s manager. With Walker’s creativity, Best’s business skills and Browne’s operations expertise, they decided to venture out on their own. At first, they considered other cities, but decided that there was no place quite like New York. “We said, let’s stay at home. Let’s see what’s in our own backyard,” Browne says. Walker found the space with George Duval, SoCo’s main mixologist, when they were searching for a bike-repair shop in Brooklyn. “It was an open space and just had really great architectural details,” says Walker. “All I did was play with the industrial feel, but warm it up a little.”

“KIDS HELPING KIDS”

JULY 28TH First day. Rochelle, Renee and Moni

KSK is an educational and mentoring program for NYC kids.

First, we educate kids on world issues in the arena of extreme poverty. Second, we mentor them through the gift of music by providing studio time and guidance to write and produce music for HHSL song a day campaign. The song a day campaign finds everyday heroes in the news and past heroes and writes songs to celebrate their amazing acts of virtue. This planets a seed of giving to their community. We also connect the kids with the everyday heroes they have written songs for to create another level of mentoring. Next the music will be compiled in a cd and sold to provide clean water in Africa and Haiti. In final we provide a pen pal program to connect NYC kids with the kids they help, initiating global unity for the next generation.

Renee was first in the booth!

It was amazing to see the everyday heroes the girls chose to write about!
Sorry its blurry but you can still feel the energy!!

The lyrics they wrote truly show how the story effected them.

“GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK”

Hip Hop Saves Lives has won an award!

Dear Chad Harper, It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the American Association of Birth Centers has selected you to receive the 2011 AABC Media Award in recognition of your extraordinary song “New Dawn for Ruth Lubic” celebrating Ruth Lubic’s work as founder of the Developing Families Center and the Family Health and Birth Center. The song has garnered attention worldwide for the FHBC/DFC’s work and its demonstration that the disgraceful infant and maternal outcomes suffered by our African American families are not intractible, and can be altered using a midwifery model of care. We will present the awards at the Opening Session of the 5th Annual AABC Birth Institute: “Climb to New Heights” on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The conference will be held at the Grand Hyatt Denver in Denver, Colorado. We invite you to stay for the Welcome Reception following the Opening Session. We hope that you will accept this award and will plan to join us in recognizing and celebrating your outstanding achievements. Sincerely, Kate E Bauer Executive Director
